The title page is the first thing a committee member sees and the first place where a paper can look careless. Fill in the details, choose the font, line spacing and margins your faculty prescribes, and download a finished title page as a Word document. The preview on the right shows how the page will look on A4.

What a title page must contain
Most faculties ask for the same six elements, ordered from the top of the page downwards:
- the name of the university and of the faculty or school;
- the name of the programme, where the rulebook asks for it;
- the student’s name, and sometimes a student number;
- the title of the paper, usually bold and larger than the rest of the page;
- the type of paper — seminar, bachelor, master or doctoral;
- the supervisor’s name with the full academic title, plus the place and date.
Font, spacing and margins
Unless the rulebook says otherwise, the usual combination is Times New Roman 12 with 1.5 line spacing and margins of 2.5 centimetres. Some faculties ask for 2.54 centimetres (one inch), and law faculties often prescribe a smaller size for footnotes. The specific values for thirty institutions are collected on the Faculty rules page, each with a link to that institution’s official document.
As a rule the title page is not numbered, but it counts as the first page of the paper. In Word you handle this by switching on the different-first-page option in the header settings.
After you download the document
The .docx you get contains the title page alone, formatted to the values you chose. Open it in
Word, compare it with your rulebook and add anything your faculty asks for separately — an institutional logo,
a student number, the academic year or a field for the grade. Then paste the title page at the start of your
paper, or carry on writing in the same document.
